Who makes it

WhatsMyPetsAge.com is an independent website made by a family in the UK. It started as a family project: [optional: a sentence or two in your own words, for example how the idea came about or your own pets].

The site is free to use and is paid for by the adverts you see on it.

How it works

Pets grow up much faster than people in their first couple of years, then age more steadily. So instead of the old "multiply by seven" rule, the converter uses published age charts:

• Dogs: the size-based chart attributed to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). Larger breeds age faster, so the result depends on your dog's adult size.
• Cats: about 15 human years by the first birthday, 24 by the second, then about 4 years for each year after that. Life stages follow the AAHA and American Association of Feline Practitioners guidelines.
• Horses: the widely published equine chart: about 6.5 human years at one, 13 at two, 18 at three and 20.5 at four, then about 2.5 years for each year after that.

Ages under one year are estimates, because the published charts start at one year old.

A rough guide, not veterinary advice

Every animal ages differently. Breed, diet, weight, exercise and health all play a part. Use the results for fun and for a general sense of your pet's life stage, and speak to your vet about your pet's health and care.
